Are you wasting your time on thinking about mind uploading? (video post)

Image
Depends. Are you an optimist? I expose an objective evaluation of the 'usefulness of spending time thinking about mind uploading'. Spoiler alert! YES, it is worth spending time on this. So follow me on my journey of spending a lot of time on this and maybe we will meet in silicon heaven!

What matters about you?

What are the parameters that an API (Artificial Personalized Intelligence) should take into account when emulating an individual's mind? Impulsivity: executive function (un-impulsivity) impulse distribution (between food, sex, sleep, aggression etc.) Personality Traits: Jackson Personality Inventory Revisited (JPI-R) Big Five Personality Traits Myers-Briggs Personality Holland Codes ...to be continued

Do you care about your body?

How much of what we, as humans, care about is physical? It is a very important question in trying to summon an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) because if our physical reality turns out to be more important than our thoughts then we might have to redefine AGI. We share so many bodily and physically related experiences at the level of our intuitions. Eating, sex, sleep, sports, laughing are all examples of physical activities that we share across cultures. If our 'robot friends' won't be able to engage in any of those activities, then 1. how likely are we going to be to connect with them in any meaningful way? 2. how close to us are they going to be in terms of emulating an actual individual?    put differently, how closely is an API (Artificial Personalized Intelligence) going to track an actual person's character? Solutions to the problem of a physical reality: 1. put AGI/API inside a mechanical robot, which can interact with the physical world. 2. Creat...

Consciousness is learning

My cousin was solving a Rubik's cube the other day. I was amazed how fast one can learn it. But what most struck me is the difference between the processes that he was doing consciously and subconsciously. In this article I will argue that consciousness is learning. After just one week of messing around with the cube, he already learned a bunch of moves that became automatic. He make one side be filled with the same color pretty fast without paying much attention. It seemed as if it were automatic, learned, he could talk while doing it. By repeating a certain move enough times, he learned it, which means that he can now do it without consciously thinking of it. He can now think about higher order moves consciously. With time, those moves will be learned too and he will no longer need to consciously think through the sequence of moves. You don't walk consciously. There was a time, though, when you did think of every move, about when you were 1 year old. If...

On consciousness

Image
1. Somatically: consciousness in the brain is found in the "ARAS", or Ascending Reticular Activating System. It is a set of brain areas in the ancient part of our brain (forebrain and midbrain) that regulate the sleep/wake cycle. 2. Consciousness is the control of attention. You are attention. All else is just your brain doing its thing, sending thoughts and stimuli to your attention . It is up to you to choose what to engage with. 3. Consciousness is learning. You are only conscious of things that are non-trivial, ie. not yet learned. Once walking, bicycle riding or typing is learned, you are no longer conscious of it.

Why upload your mind?

Image
Why do I want to : upload my mind extend my life slow down time enhance my mind's capacities start a new life as an API (Artificial Personalized Intelligence) Because I have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) of soo many things. I am becoming ever more aware of my limitations. I have a shitty memory, slow brain, I am often lazy, and I am possibly going to die soon. I want to be a better person. I want to experience deeper levels of complexity in thought. I want to meet other similar minds and I want to form true friendships with them. I don't want to have to choose which cool things not to do. I feel like I am losing 99.9% of all possible amazing experiences. I want to feel less guilt doing stuff that I love but I think is a waste of time. (eg. starcraft) It seems like a very daunting, yet possible challenge. My currency is consciousness. I want to live to see the future, which I believe w...
